NEW PATIENT FAQS
YOUR FIRST VISIT
HOW TO PREPARE?
On the day of your appointment, please do not brush or scrape your tongue. The tongue coating is very important to diagnosis and can be disrupted with brushing. Taking your pulse in both wrists and visually examining your tongue are part of diagnosing what patterns you are displaying.
HOW TO DRESS?
Wear comfortable clothes, preferably ones that stretch and allow easy access to your upper arms and legs. If you are coming from work, don't worry we will provide you with a gown and appropriate draping. If you feel you are getting sick, are sick or getting Gua Sha or cupping, please bring a scarf or wear clothes that will cover your neck and back.
HOW LONG WILL THE FIRST SESSION TAKE?
The first session might take a full hour to an hour and a half depending on your medical history. Your follow-up sessions should be around an hour total. Your initial intake form will give your practitioner information to start treating you, but you should report any changes or additional concerns you have at follow up appointments.
DOES IT HURT?
Acupuncture usually doesn't cause discomfort or pain. Once a needle is in, you may or may not feel a mild, dull ache or a slight tingling sensation that goes away. How acupuncture feels will vary depending on where the needle is placed on the body. If you are sick or on your menses it may be more sensitive. If you have phobia of needles magnets are used instead. Overall, most patients do not consider acupuncture to be painful and they find the benefits outweigh any discomfort.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS DO YOU NEED?
This will depend on how long the symptoms have been going on for, your age, if symptoms are consistent, and how well you are progressing. For Migraines, Fertility Boost, Hormone Balancing, PCOS, Amenorrhea, Menopause it will be a longer process according to each individuals presentation. It is important to know that one acupuncture treatment will not adequately address your issues. Data shows the Overall Average Treatment Time is eight treatments with complex cases being twelve.

WHAT IS THE SKINNIE ON INSURANCE?
Know that you may have a DEDUCTIBLE to meet before your treatments are covered. This means you are responsible for the full amount of $150.00 for initial visit and $125 for subsequent visits until you meet your deductible amount. Also, some insurances have caveats that may not allow you to have acupuncture under certain circumstances or only for certain parts of your body or conditions even if they say you have acupuncture coverage.
WHAT DOES MY INSURANCE COVER?
Most insurances ONLY cover acupuncture for PAIN, CHRONIC PAIN, NECK PAIN, LOWER BACK PAIN, and NAUSEA from EITHER CANCER TREATMENTS or PREGNANCY. They also vary on what they cover from insurance to insurance. Some will cover manual therapy but may only cover 15 minutes. And in the case insurance DOES NOT PAY, because yes that happens even though you have coverage, you may be responsible for all costs not covered by insurance up to our discounted cash rates.
HOW DO I FIND OUT IF I HAVE ACUPUNCTURE BENEFITS?
You may send us a copy of the front and back of your insurance card with your date of birth to: email@example.com
If you decide to call your insurance yourself, these are the questions you ask:
Do I have acupuncture benefits, how many visit do I have? Are they shared visits with chiropractic or physical therapy? What is my in network deductible and how much have I met of that deductible? For Anthem patients who want to see Dr. Allerton please ask if you have out of network (OON) benefits, if you do, ask how much your OON deductible is and how much have you met of the OON deductible. Also ask if you I need a referral, and what your copay will be?
